Not the cleanest chinese restaurant you'll ever been into, but the food makes up for it. Maki, lomi, miki-bihon are the big 3 here, at least for me. For some reason, the original flavor of the ingredients somehow changed... it taste different than what i used to eat here 10 years ago.

If you're looking to dine in a place that serves authentic Chinese cuisine, look no further that Mañosa Ongpin. It is hands-down my favorite place to eat in in Chinatown. Gosh, where do I even start? Let's just say that I found out about this place since my mother used to eat here since she was a little girl. We went to try it once and then started the many adventures to Chinatown just to taste their food. Don't expect too much though, this place looks like it has not been renovated for 20 years. It looked like a kitchen extended up to the second floor. Word of advice, eat at the second floor--they have the air-conditioning there. If you come to visit, try my favorites Maki Mi and Kikiam which would fill you up that there would be no more space for more! But if there is, also try their rice meals. If you do drop by, say hi to the owner who sits at a table in the second floor.

How do you know if a Chinese restaurant is good? An easy (and practically surefire way) to do this is to look around the people eating. If the clientele is mostly Chinese, then you've got a winner. And that is what we have in Ongpin Manosa. I was first introduced to this place by a Chinoy friend of mine. We braved the traffic of the busy Manila area just to arrive at the doorstep on this unpretentious establishment which looked like it had been, at one time, rented out as an apartment. Like many of the good Chinese restaurants I've been taken to over the years, the interiors and ambience are distinctly meh. But the food is what matters. We ordered a surfeit of entrees. I had soy chicken and tons of kikiam, siomai and spring rolls. I can't quite explain it but the taste is definitely authentic. The bill, when it came, was a pleasant surprise: a little less than two thousand pesos for a table of five, very full diners.

Ongpin Mañosa has been around like forever! Whenever me and my family go to Chinatown Binondo, we would prefer eating here instead of those fancy-looking Chinese restaurants in the vicinity. My favorite here, since childhood, is their Miki Bihon. It has legit homemade fish balls and kikiam! Aside from this, they're also known for their Maki Mi, a thick savory soup with chunks of pork strips. They also have other Chinese favorites that you'll fall in love with. The restaurants is like a canteen but it deifinitely gives a nostalgic feel. Throughout the years, Ongpin Mañosa has consistently served the best authentic Chinese food in Binondo.

I must admit, 95 percent of the time, I am only able to eat Mañosa when my dad takes home food from the place, since god knows when, but I still look forward to it each and every single time. I've probably had Mañosa since I wasn't born yet, and ask any knowledgeable Chinatown foodie and you'll find out, Mañosa is the "original" and best Maki Mi in town. Pork strips covered in flour fish paste (similar to fish balls but not really) in a thick, golden starchy soup which is topped over a savory, super eggy noodle that is just too difficult to resist. Add some black vinegar to cut the richness and, perfection! Do bring your own "kaserola" when taking out for the entire family and they will most likely give you extra soup! Who doesn't want extra soup right? Heck who doesn't want any free extras! Or anything free for that matter!

Mañosa is a legend. My grandmother ate here when she was a kid, and so did my mother. And now I dive headfirst into the streets of Chinatown just to have their thick maki soup with egg noodles, or their juicy kikiam as thick as your arm, or even the lomi served in overflowing bowls. This is what makes good Chinese food: authenticity. I don't much like the big-name restaurants that's all presentation, but no actual oomph to their food. I prefer the small mom-and-pop stores that have been open for who knows how long because they invested in authenticity, not in pomp. That's what Mañosa did. Two cramped floors with tiny tables you're encouraged to share with other patrons, skinned ducks hanging from hooks, and noodles being made in full view of the rest of the restaurant. That's authenticity for you.

Some restaurants are legends. Mañosa is one of them. Known most for their maki, I knew I had to go and try it for myself when a friend told me he was heading to Ongpin for some errands. Being the usual sneaky me, I was able to lure him into eating at Mañosa even if it wasn't even time to eat yet. I bargained for us to only order a serving of lomi and he agreed. I enjoyed watching the cooks, with fluid movements, expertly washing-off the pans with water and washing sticks, adding one ingredient after the other, flipping and tossing whatever it was they were cooking. I got a stern look when our order arrived and it was a bowl overflowing with maki. We slowly scooped out our portions and indulged in the thick, flavorful sauce and the equally thick noodles. My friend was enjoying his meal so much that he ordered a serving of kikiam, which was big and tasty compared to the usual kikiam we see and buy from street vendors. I now know why Mañosa has stayed open this long - good food, quick and cheap.
